The furnace comes in an insulated cabinet 40″ high and 28″ deep made of galvanized steel and pre-painted. The upflow models have conveniently hinged blower doors and door latches. The equipment can be installed horizontally or vertically to suit your purpose.
One would think that after discovering that the plastic collector flange, (that Trane considers part of the heat exchanger), routinely develops “cracks” where it attaches to the plastic “transition piece”, it would have issued a factory warranty on the defective part that can lead to moisture leaking onto the control board, or worse, leakage of deadly carbon monoxide. It would appear to me that the crack was caused at the factory when some knucklehead overtightened the screws connecting the transition piece to the “collector box”, causing the screw attachment knob to develop a crack. So, a $1.00 piece of cheap plastic now necessitates a $1200 repair or a completed replacement. What a scam! What a racket! Shame on Trane and their “trane-wreck”.
This was installed six years ago in new construction. It never performed well, the house took long to heat and cool and the temps were uneven around the house. This fall it began operating intermittently and erratically. Note that the warranty is five years. After three tech visits and $400 later it was discovered that the heat exchanger was cracked. Took some work to open it up and use a mirror on an extension rod but I saw the four inch long crack. Luckily it was guaranteed for life (however, $740 in labor to replace) but it is not available for at least a month, maybe more, in the dead of winter in Seattle. The crack in the heat exchanger makes the burner box run too hot, it shuts down after ten min triggering the high limit switch, it also has difficulty starting up because the draft inducer can’t produce the necessary pressure, a condition also created by the cracked heat exchanger. The circuit board is also operating intermittently, giving false signal that the high limit switch is open (four flashes on the diagnostic led on circuit board). The tech says it is a weakness in all Trane products. How about $400 for an upgraded replacement board? The dealer says we can replace the entire unit for $4000. The factory support has been non existent. The Trane web site sucks and they avoid any human contact. I am looking at other brands this week. My Trane Model # tdx1d120a9601ab, serial # 6302hbb7g.

I had this Trane XR90 for ten years. Every part in it has been replaced more than once except the heat exchanger. Now the heat exchanger is leaking gas and carbon monoxide. Learn from my mistake. Buyer beware!
A red light blinking 9 times refers to a problem with the igniter. There may be a diagram explaining the error codes on the back of your unit’s front panel.
