Came home to a cold house. Playing with the thermostat got the fans to do strange things, but the burners never lit. Hello? Angie’s List? Enlisted the aid of a recommended repair company. Upshot: Main circuit board is dead, and the furnace is only 12 years old. Cause of failure? No visible cause; “Probably an integrated circuit chip.” So… Time for a new board. Nope. Can’t just get a board. Must replace just about everything, but the firebox, burners, circulation fan, and outer housing (this list is shorter than the must-replace list). Damages: $2060.36 plus installation. That is approximately one-half the cost of completely replacing the furnace with another — more highly rated — brand furnace. Oh… and the AC unit in the system went out last year. At least I cannot accuse them of false advertising. It’s true. Nothing runs like a Trane. If you are in the market for an initially expensive, unreliable, excessively expensive to repair, moderately efficient home heating and cooling system, buy a Trane. If, on the other hand, you prefer reliability and repair-ability at a rational price, then, in my experience, you should look for a different brand.

I replaced a 30-year old furnace and had my ducts sealed. My gas use has gone up every month since then, and it is not correlated to the weather. The furnace is also very loud. The features such as the variable fan and two-stage burner are nice, but they don’t make for a good system.

2007 gas furnace died Friday night. No parts were available until Monday because the parts dealer wasn’t open on weekends. On Monday, the replacement blower motor wa sold – but without the wiring harness. Won’t receive the wiring harness until Tuesday afternoon via UPS. Really, wth? The Trane 800 number does not work, and Contact Us on Trane’s website does not work. Trane can go to hell. Completely unacceptable. No service, nor support, nor parts. Do not buy!

I purchased a Trane furnace- central air and April air in 2004.. every winter and spring I spend hundreds to maintain this unit. Blind and Sons says I need to have a service call every 6 months to replace filter and check out equipment. This unit has not worked well ever. I had to contact Trane and they put in a new motor board after two years. Blind and sons were going to charge me $800.00. I spent over 5,000.00 in this unit in 2004. Why do I need to spend 440.00 a year to maintain it.as it wont function unless they make a service call. Blind and sons tell me I cannot purchase filters on my own..they need to come out twice a year and charge me 89.00 each for each service call the filters cost 175.00…this is not right. I’m writing to the Attorney General of Ohio.

We bought this trane xv80 model furnace 8 years ago to replace an old Coleman unit that was coming on 30 years. We wanted to get into the higher efficiency units and cut down on heating costs. Within 2 years the flame sensor crapped out. After pleading for mercy the Heating Company replaced it on warranty, if I agreed to their annual maintenance package. Mistake #2, and I’m still waiting to see some relief on heating costs. Now another 4 years later the flame sensor craps out again, on a Sunday morning. To get the Heating Company to come out on a Sunday I have to agree to a $250.00 call out fee. The weather reports have a winter storm for cast for Monday night so what choice do I have. 5 1/2 hours later the service technician shows up and within 10 minutes the furnace is fixed and I am out another $562.00 I think I’m going back to a Coleman!

Question and Answer

Question:

Should I be concerned about the blinking red light that shows on the front panel of the Trane XV80?

Answer:

The diagnostics for the Trane XV80 can be determined by the red, green and amber flashing LED lights. Depending on the number of flashes the red light is giving off depends on what needs attention. See page 24 of theinstallation manualfor the specific issue to the number of flashes you are noticing.

Question:

Red light blinks 7 times on furnace. What does that mean?

Answer:

This is an error code for a gas valve circuit problem. On the inside front panel of your furnace, there should be a list of error codes and their meanings for your unit.

With the gas valve circuit code, there is most likely a problem on the circuit board. This should be addressed by an HVAC professional.
